Ocean Day

The City of Hallandale Beach, in partnership with the City of Hollywood, Broward County, Sierra Club Broward Group, Florida Department of Environmental Protection Coral Reef Conservation Program, and Friends of Our Florida Reefs are happy to announce a new local event to celebrate the 50^th anniversary of the first Earth Day event.
 
Ocean Day 2020 is a free, family-friendly event designed to highlight our wonderful coastal resources here in southeast Florida. At Ocean Day, there will be something for all ages and education levels. Inside the Hallandale Beach Cultural Community Center, there will be nearly 40 non-profit and governmental exhibitors for ocean conservation, reef conservation & restoration, manatees, sea birds, sea turtles, sharks, parks and beaches, urban farming and home gardening, home/business energy conservation, and more. In the “Learning Lab,” attendees can listen and ask experts questions during panels on:

• Low Nutrient Landscaping
• Increasing Seaweed Blooms
• Careers in Marine Science
• Climate Change
• Coral Disease/Restoration

Later in the day, the Learning Lab will transition from panels to special guest speakers including Cat Uden (Oceana), Richard Whitecloud (S.T.O.P.) and Matt Schwartz (South Florida Wildlands Association).

At 10:30 AM, SCUBA divers and snorkelers are invited to attend a free, 2-hour BleachWatch class at the Hallandale Beach Library (steps from the Community Center). Students will learn how to identify and report signs of coral bleaching and disease to the SEAFAN marine incident citizen science program.

The Hallandale Beach City Hall Commission Chambers will be transformed into “The Porthole” where attendees can watch ocean-themed documentaries and attend a presentation of native rescued animals from Busch Wildlife Sanctuary.

Free document shredding, prescription disposal, and native tree/shrub giveaway will also happen at Ocean Day. Don't miss out!
