Commissioner Sabrina Javellana

About

Sabrina Javellana, a proud lifelong resident of Hallandale Beach, has gratefully served as the city’s youngest and first Asian-American Commissioner since November 19th, 2018.

Commissioner Javellana graduated from Hallandale High School where she began her path in public service as President of the Key Club and the Adjutant of the JROTC Charger Battalion. She has recently graduated from Florida International University with her Bachelor’s in International Relations and Political Science and served as the Chief of Staff to the FIU Student Government Council-Biscayne Bay Campus overseeing the Cabinet. She credits her journey to mentorship from teachers, public servants, and community leaders and works to pay it forward by investing in our youth. Supporting the next generation through our public schools and educational and recreation youth programs in the city is of utmost importance to her.

Ensuring the city is actively engaged in recognizing the effects of climate change on our community, being prepared for natural disasters and extreme weather events, updating our outdated above and below ground infrastructure, supporting small, minority, women, and veteran owned small businesses, and making progress in cementing Hallandale Beach as a welcome, progressive, and inclusive place for all to live, visit and work in are some of Javellana’s goals in office. She examines and crafts policy and budgets proactively with a lens of equity, justice, and opportunity. She encourages residents to share their ideas to better the city and is happy to assist in making them a reality!

Commissioner Javellana has passed environmental policies protecting our coral reefs and waterways and divesting city investments from fossil fuels. She advocates at the state level on behalf of the city’s appropriations requests such as the Austin Hepburn Senior Center and for policies that respect home rule and local voices making local choices. With steadfast advocacy, she was part of the effort to defeat a preemption bill in the 2019 legislative session that would have repealed vacation rental regulation ordinances in cities - including Hallandale Beach.

Currently, Javellana serves on the Florida League of Cities Municipal Administration Policy Committee and Broward Solid Waste and Recycling Working Group. In 2020, she chaired the Hallandale Beach Census Complete Count Committee. Commissioner Javellana has been recognized as a certified National Wildlife Federation Habitat Steward, Florida League of Cities 2020 Home Rule Hero Honoree, and Young Elected Officials Network 35 under 35.
