Known as Dotty, Commissioner Ross was born in Pennsylvania , but raised from infancy in New York. Commissioner Ross has called Florida, and specifically Hallandale Beach, home for more than 40 years. Twenty-eight of those years she was an employee of the Hallandale Beach Police Department. Dotty Graduated from the first Auxiliary Police Academy and served consecutively in an administrative position to four consecutive chiefs of police. Upon her retirement she was encouraged by City officials and several citizens to run for a Commission position. She received the highest vote in 1995 and has served as Mayor, Vice Mayor, and Commissioner since that time.
Major Studies
Commissioner Ross graduated cum laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice in 1981 from Nova Southeastern University, and from Florida International University with a Master Degree in Public Administration in 1986. F.I.U. off campus classes were conducted in Costa Rica, England, Germany, Holland and Spain.
Career Achievements
Commissioner Ross has had many firsts in her career.
- First Female President of the Broward County Crime Commission.
- President of the National Association to Advance Ethical Hypnosis.
- Graduate of the Auxiliary Broward County Police Academy.
- First Administrative Secretary of the Hallandale Beach Police and Fire Pension Fund. Where she currently holds a trustee position
Civic Memberships & Public Awards
Mayor Ross holds membership in many political and civic organizations. Dotty is a strong advocate for education at all levels and participates in direct personal involvement in local Hallandale Beach schools, as well as a long affiliation with Sheridan Technical school in an adjoining city. Her work in the League of Cities is legendary at all levels, Broward County, State and National. She represents the Broward League on an important Water Advisory Board. Of equal importance is her twelve year commitment to service on the Broward County, Human Services Community Action Agency. She served as Trustee on the board of Directors of Aventura Hospital, Florida and remains active on the hospital's Performance Improvement Council. It is difficult to enumerate her many affiliations. In addition, Dotty is active in the Hallandale Chamber of Commerce and an Honorary Board Member of the Hallandale Symphonic Pops Orchestra. Since graduation from both schools, she has been an active participant in alumni functions. Annually, she attends conferences for the Association of College Honor Societies and Alpha Phi Sigma, Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.
Commissioner Dorothy "Dotty" Ross has received many awards and acclamations for her outstanding service in office, to numerous to mention. She enjoys all of the recognition she has received from Public Official of the year, numerous school advocacy awards to First lady of Broward County, Broward County Fair, and Outstanding Public Official.
Her most recent recognition was from the National Association of Professional Women, for her demonstrated excellence and dedication within her profession. |
