MOTION TO CONSIDER AND APPROVE:

 

The presentation of the 2011 Holiday Lights Awards. 

 

Why Action is Necessary

To present awards to residents and property owners whose properties have been selected by the Beautification Board as outstanding in regards to holiday lights decorations.

 

What Action Accomplishes

This action encourages residents and property owners to participate in promoting a festive atmosphere, thereby contributing to the City’s beatification during the holiday season.  This award program recognizes the effort that businesses and residents put forth to beautify and give an attractive look to their properties.

 

Is this Action Goal Related

This action addresses the following City Strategic Priorities:

Excellence in Government by ensuring that local government values and supports community input and participation; and Livable Community, by providing a community where quality and affordable leisure opportunities and activities are provided; and where diversity is strengthened and celebrated;  and Economic Development, by supporting business owners in maintaining and improving property values.

 

Previous Action Taken

This award has been presented to businesses and residents for the past 16 consecutive years.

Summary Explanation/Background

STAFF RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION

The Commission approved the Holiday Lights Award Program on May 20, 1997. According to Administrative Policy No. 2026.001/R3 - Holiday Lights Award Program - a Committee annually selects properties judged to have outstanding holiday lights and displays.  This year, the Committee consisted of six (6) board members.

·         Rochelle Blum

·         Morris Cook

·         Henry Hahn

·         Ann Hennigson

·         Steve Morley

 

The Holiday Committee toured the City on December 19th, 2011 and selected properties for awards. The recommended winners are featured in the attached PowerPoint presentation. The award recipients are chosen from the following categories and will receive the following prizes:

Categories:

  1. Commercial
  2. Single-Family Residential
  3. Multi-Family Residential
  4. Mobile Home Properties

 

 

First, Second, and Third Place Prizes:

  1. Plaque
  2. T-Shirt
  3. Holiday lights/displays
  4. Yard sign (First Place winners in Residential category only)

 

Honorable Mention Prizes:

  1. Small plaque
  2. T-shirts

 

Staff will hold a reception for the award winners at 5:30 p.m.; therefore, it is requested the awards presentation begin at 6:00 p.m. on January 18th, 2012.

Fiscal Impact

Fiscal Impact/Cost Summary:

Gifts, plaques, shirts, and yard signs are purchased for the award recipients and a reception is given prior to the award ceremony.  The cost for these items and the reception will amount to approximately $1,500.00.  These funds are budgeted in Account No. 001-4210-539-3472/ Special Events.
