SUBJECT:     Request for Agenda Item - Consideration of the City’s Participation in the South Florida Living Green Fair’s Mayor Challenge

The South Florida Living Green Fair’s Mayor Challenge is sponsored by the South Florida Living Green Fair, a “Living Green” event to be held November 14-15 at John U. Lloyd Beach Park in Dania Beach, as part of the activities leading to this South Florida event.  The Mayor’s challenge is an opportunity to bring awareness to the City’s sustainability efforts while educating citizens on easy ways they can help preserve our water supply.  This South Florida-wide Mayors competition will reward the city with the most resident participation in The Wyland Clean Water Challenge, which provides guidelines for cleaner choices in homes, cars and yards to positively benefit our ocean environment.

Participation by the community is easy, educational and free of charge: interested residents will pledge – by computer - to participate in the Wyland Clean Water Challenge.  By agreeing to take simple steps towards water conservation, residents will learn how their cumulative efforts can save significant amounts of natural resources and their hard-earned dollars.  In addition, just for participating in the Challenge, residents will receive a free ticket to the South Florida Living Green.

The winning city will have the opportunity to display a 45-foot original mural designed by marine artist and conservationist Wayland, which he will commission live at the South Florida Living Green Fair.  For one year, the winning city will display this symbolic piece of art in any public space to commemorate the residents’ commitment to a clean environment.  

As a community we have taken many steps leading us towards sustainability and conservation of natural resources, and I believe it is time for us to get the word out and pride ourselves in our efforts.  Therefore, I am requesting support of the City Commission to encourage our community to participate in this worthy environmental cause.
