SUBJECT:   Discussion of Observing "Community Planning Month" in October

PURPOSE

The American Planning Association (APA) recognizes October as National Planning Month.  The theme for this year’s National Community Planning Month is ‘Community Sustainability.’ This is an opportunity for us to help our residents both individual and businesses, learn and recognize the role our Planning Team as it strives to create a more environmentally-friendly and sustainable community for the residents of Hallandale Beach.

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

Each October, the American Planning Association (APA), its members, chapters, divisions, and professional institute, sponsor National Community Planning Month to raise the visibility of the important role of planners and planning in communities across the U.S.

Planners address both the existing and future needs of a community.  From alternative energy sources to reducing automobile dependence, planners can have a key role in changing how our communities work, function, and impact the earth.

RECOMMENDATION

This Proclamation be placed on the September 16, 2009 City Commission meeting agenda.
