CITY OF HALLANDALE BEACH
MEMORANDUM
DATE: January 8, 2009
TO: D. Mike Good, City Manager
FROM: William M. Brant, P.E., Director of Public Works, Utilities & Engineering
SUBJECT: South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) Presentation
CAD #017/07
PURPOSE
Presentation of Water Savings Incentive Program (SIP) Grant award to the City Commission by South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD).
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Mr. Elbert Waters, Director of the Broward Service Center for the SFWMD, would like to symbolically present the City with the FY2008-2009 WaterSIP check and reaffirm the importance of water conservation to protect the region’s water supply.
The SFWMD has established a grant program that encourages municipalities to implement water conservation programs in their communities. At the May 7, 2008 meeting the City Commission authorized the City of Hallandale Beach to apply for the Water Savings Incentive Program Grant. The City was awarded $25,000 and will contribute a match of $25,000.00. The City proposes to use the $50,000 to implement a Toilet Retrofit Program, whereby the City provides a selective volume flush toilet retrofit kit to multi-family and residential properties. Each kit will help conserve water by allowing the user to have the option to use less water when flushing liquids and more when flushing solids. The flushing system may save up to 1000 gallons of water per year. The City hopes to distribute 1000 units, which will translate into conserving 1,000,000 gallons of water per year.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff is respectfully requesting to place Mr. Waters’ presentation on the February 4, 2009 meeting agenda as a time certain item.
